Skepticism in Placenta Consumption
First ever double-blind placebo-controlled study on placenta encapsulation shows…disappointingly, not much. With the popularity of placenta encapsulation on the rise, everyone is wondering “does placenta encapsulation actually help?” Unfortunately, the jury is still out on that one. What we do know is that anecdotally, the women who are encapsulating and consuming their placentas are reporting big benefits that we can’t ignore.
The one piece of information that this study of only 23 people provides is that placenta pills alone do not provide an adequate supply of iron in the cases of people with iron deficiency. The surprise is that postpartum placenta specialists have never made any claims to contradict that, nor is that the study many of us are interested in learning more about.
With the hundreds of placentas that have been processed through Music City Doulas, we can say that not a single client has ever reported any negative effects of consuming her placenta. In fact, we have heard quite the opposite from our clients, who have reported feeling more energized, upbeat, positive, and ‘“emotionally leveled out.” Our clients even report a noticeable difference on days they forgot to take their placenta capsules. We would be more interested in seeing more thorough studies that show the effects of placenta encapsulation on the energy, mood, and emotions of the postpartum mother. We are hoping that this is just the first of many studies to be released regarding placentophagy.
What this study does tell us is that at this time, they do not see any negatives to consuming placenta. Nor do they see any positives. There is insufficient data to make any new conclusions about placenta consumption, which means more studies are needed.
Until then, we continue to listen to the anecdotal benefits reported by our clients and ensure we are providing the safest methods and systems for processing, including following World Health Organization standards for safe organ transport, OSHA bloodborne pathogens regulations, and processing in the client’s home only – reducing the chances of placenta mix-up or contamination to zero.
Are you interested in having your placenta encapsulated or need a little more information, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
